Xiaomi to bring its new Redmi Note 9 series to India as the Redmi 9 Power and Mi 10i

Xiaomi launches a lot of phones every year, which is par for the course for a big OEM that operates in multiple markets. Just last week, Xiaomi launched the new Redmi Note 9 4G (device codename: lime), Redmi Note 9 5G (cannon), and Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G (gauguinpro) in China, bringing along a bunch of upgrades across the board for one of its most popular product brandings. Now, we have evidence that suggests Xiaomi is looking to bring two of these three phones to India, but curiously under different branding, namely as the Redmi 9 Power and the Xiaomi Mi 10i.

Redmi 9 Power (limein)

Shortly after the launch of the Redmi Note 9 4G in China, Xiaomi released the firmware for the device for the region. But alongside the release of V12.0.5.0.QJQCNXM (Chinese ROM) for lime, Xiaomi also published 12.0.1.0.QJQINXM (limein), which is the Indian ROM for the device. This is evidence that the company plans to launch the device in India.

But this also poses a curious problem — there is already a Redmi Note 9 (with 4G connectivity)(device codename: merlin) in India. Digging into the published firmware, we can spot that the build.prop file for limein mentions the marketing name of the upcoming device as the Redmi 9 Power.

build_lime.prop:ro.product.vendor.marketname=Redmi 9 Power

Xiaomi India has not announced anything on this phone yet, but we can expect them to be making an announcement soon.

Xiaomi Mi 10i (gauguininpro)

The gauguin and gauguinpro lineup from Xiaomi was actually spotted back in July 2020, and we mentioned that the device would be coming to India at that stage itself. Now, new evidence corroborates our findings from months ago.

A device popped up on the Google Play Console with the marketing name “Mi 10i”, and the codename “gauguininpro“. The codename may appear weird, but that is how regional variants are often codenamed by the company — the in in the middle denotes that the phone is coming to India.

Gauguin recently launched as the Mi 10T Lite in Europe, while Gauguinpro launched as the Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G in China. While we do not have information of gauguin coming to India just yet, the Play Console Listing for gauguinpro makes it abundantly clear that the device is coming to India under the name of Mi 10i. The rebranding is somewhat necessary, again, because India already has a Redmi Note 9 Pro (4G). Xiaomi India has not revealed anything yet, but we reckon it is just a matter of time at this stage.

Xiaomi and its love for 9

Rebranding products differently in different regions is not new — not for Xiaomi, and not for a lot of other OEMs. It is a very common practice in the industry wherein you release the same product, or a similar product with very small changes, under different names in different regions. The branding changes according to the goodwill in the region. And Xiaomi’s Redmi and Redmi Note lineups have garnered a strong reputation for themselves over the years across the world.

But with Xiaomi, Redmi, Redmi Note and the number “9”, we are at a point where it has become very difficult to track products, especially if you track them across different regions as we do. Mishaal put together a list to better illustrate this point.

So if at any point you feel very confused about how Xiaomi names its products, count us with you.

Amazfit unveils GTS 2 mini and POP Pro smartwatches in China

After launching the Amazfit GTS 2 and GTR 2 earlier this year in October, Amazfit has now unveiled two budget-friendly smartwatches in China. As its name suggests, the new Amazfit GTS 2 mini is an affordable version of the GTS 2, which features the same square dial as the premium smartwatch but with a smaller 1.55-inch display. On the other hand, the new Amazfit POP Pro is the GPS version of the Amazfit POP from earlier this year.

As per the announcement post on Weibo (via fonearena), the Amazfit GTS 2 features a 1.55-inch (354 x 306 pixels) AMOLED display with a pixel density of 301ppi. The smartwatch features support for over 70 sports modes and activities, continuous heart rate monitoring, and in-depth sleep monitoring. In terms of sensors, it features Huami’s BioTracker 2 PPG sensor with blood oxygen level detection, an accelerometer, a gyroscope sensor, a geomagnetic sensor, and an ambient light sensor.

Furthermore, the Amazfit GTS 2 mini offers water-resistance up to 5ATM, it features Bluetooth 5.0 BLE for connectivity, GPS and GLONASS for location tracking, and NFC for payments. Finally, the watch packs a 220mAh battery that can deliver up to 14 days of battery life on a single charge.

The Amazfit POP Pro, as mentioned earlier, is just a GPS version of the Amazfit POP that was launched earlier this year. It features a 1.43-inch TFT touch display with a resolution of 320 x 302 pixels, an optical heart rate sensor for continuous heart rate monitoring, blood oxygen (SpO2) sensor, and a 3-axis accelerometer and gyroscope for activity tracking. The watch supports over 60 sports modes and it’s based on the PAI health assessment system.

The Amazfit POP Pro is priced at CNY 399 (~$61), and it will go on sale in China from December 10th. The watch will also be available in three color variants — Black, Green, and Pink. As of now, Amazfit has released no information about international availability but fonearena claims that the Amazfit POP Pro will soon be launched in the Indian market as the Amazfit BIP U Pro.

This console generation, I finally came to a decision–that I was going to focus on PC gaming. I’ve always been a console gamer, but it’s easier to get into PC gaming than ever before, and most titles That I’m interested in get released on Steam or Epic Games Store in a better format than a console game, anyway. Here’s when Android 11 will roll out for Sony Xperia phones

Since being released in September, Android 11 has been slow to roll out to third-party devices, with the Vivo V20 and OnePlus 8T among the first to receive the update. Unless you purchased a Pixel device, chances are you’ve been patiently waiting, but the good news is if you own a Sony Xperia device, you won’t have to wait much longer.

Sony has revealed when it plans to roll out Android 11 to some of its devices, with the Xperia 1 II getting the update as soon as December 2020. Owners of that device will essentially get a nice holiday gift before the end of the year.

Sony Xperia Android 11 firmware rollout schedule

  • Xperia 1 II: from December 2020
  • Xperia 5 II: from the end of January 2021
  • Xperia 10 II: from the end of January 2021
  • Xperia 1: from February 2021
  • Xperia 5: from February 2021

Meanwhile, Sony said the Xperia 5 II and Xperia 10 II will receive the Android 11 update by the end of January 2021. The Xperia 1 and Xperia 5 will be updated to Android 11 from February 2021. Sony doesn’t provide exact dates for any of the devices, simply providing rough estimates. Hopefully, the company doesn’t hit any delays.

Sony doesn’t provide any other details beyond the devices listed, including whether the Xperia 10 or Xperia 10 Plus will receive Android 11 in the future. For now, the company appears laser focused on the devices listed, so count yourself lucky if your Xperia handset made the cut.

Back in October, Sony’s Open Devices Program released an Android 11 build guide and binaries for select Xperia phones, which included the Xperia XZ Premium, Xperia XA2 and Xperia XA2 Ultra, and the Xperia XZ2, among others. Some Xperia devices have also picked up somewhat working Android 11-based custom ROMs thanks to the aftermarket development community.

As soon as Sony releases the Android 11 update, or if there are any changes, we’ll be sure to let you know.

Get the Samsung Galaxy Buds Live for $60 off during Cyber Monday!

Last Friday, we covered a whole lot of amazing deals for you to check out, going through everything from phones to TVs, laptops, and everything in between. And due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, online shopping has become bigger than ever, with deals going through several days. Now, it’s Cyber Monday, and the amazing deals retailers have prepared for this day have just started to drip in. Right now, you can go on Woot and grab a pair of Samsung Galaxy Buds Live for just $110, down from the usual $170 they usually retail for.

    Samsung Galaxy Buds Live
The Samsung Galaxy Buds Live, the iconically bean-shaped earbuds from Samsung, feature ANC support and decent battery life, and they're retailing right now for $110.

The Samsung Galaxy Buds Live, also infamously called the “beans”, surprisingly manages to provide a lot for what you’re paying despite their strange form factor. Yes, they’re shaped like beans, but this shape also allows them to feature active noise cancellation without actually having to feature a sealed design like other earbuds often do. And the craziest thing is that it actually works, although maybe not to the same degree as other earbuds with a proper seal does.

The battery life is not as amazing as what you will be able to find in the Galaxy Buds+, clocking in at roughly 5 hours if you’re using ANC and 8 hours with ANC disabled. However, the case will be able to provide quick pop-ups on the go. You can also charge the case using fast charging or wireless charging if you want to.

There’s a lot to love about the weird-looking Galaxy Buds Live, but the price was one factor that some people weren’t fully sold into. At $110, though, it is as good of a deal as it gets, as you’re getting an amazing pair of earbuds with Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity, compatibility with both iOS and Android, and ANC support for canceling outside noise effectively. Be sure to act quickly, though, as this deal will be gone soon.

ASUS ZenFone 5Z gets VoLTE support on T-Mobile and VoWiFi on Jio

The ZenFone 5Z, a flagship smartphone released by ASUS back in 2018, is a pretty old device now yet still somewhat regularly receives software updates from its maker. Recently, an update which brings Wi-Fi Calling (VoWiFi) support on Reliance Jio has been rolled out, which is a function that the device lacked in the past. Moreover, the new build finally enables Voice over LTE (VoLTE) support on T-Mobile’s network. These might sound like small changes but something that many users in India and the U.S. will be happy to see.

ASUS Zenfone 5Z XDA Forums

Making a regular phone call means that your connection will drop to 3G or even 2G as most calls are made over either of those two connectivities. However, the old school circuit-switched voice networks are gradually being phased out in favor of IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). Features offered by IMS, such as VoLTE  and VoWiFi are particularly demanded across smartphones because of the increased voice clarity on call, along with keeping a consistent 4G (or 5G) data connection while on a call. Given the fact that major US carriers are going to block voice and data service for phones that don’t support VoLTE in the near future, the update from ASUS essentially breathes new life into the ZenFone 5Z.

The size of the incremental OTA package is merely 50MB and it will upgrade the global, Russian, and Japanese ZenFone 5Z variants from 100.10.107.99 to 100.10.107.110. The Android security patch level (SPL) of this build is Novemver 2020. Apart from the telephony related improvements, the update also optimizes the stability of touch responses.

You can find the full changelog of software version 100.10.107.110 for the ASUS ZenFone 5Z below:

  1. Updated Android security patch
  2. Enabled VoLTE on TMO (US)
  3. Enabled VoWiFi on JIO (IN)
  4. Improved touch stability
  5. Fixed a delay issue when turning off Wi-Fi from quick settings

Samsung Galaxy A32 5G leaked renders give us a better look at Samsung’s upcoming budget 5G phone

Just a few days ago, leaked renders revealed what was said to be the Galaxy A32 5G. A new report has unveiled what is allegedly another render of the device, giving us our best look yet at Samsung’s affordable 5G device.

The last renders we saw were from a case maker, so some of the design elements remained a secret. However, these new renders look like they came directly from Samsung, showcasing a teardrop notch, rounded chassis, and what appears to be a flat glass back.

Meanwhile, the renders give us a better look at the rear triple-camera setup, which isn’t enclosed in a housing but protrudes about 1mm from the phone’s body; it looks cleaner that way. The primary sensor will allegedly be 48MP, and one of the other sensors is said to be a 2MP depth sensor.

Other rumored specs include a 6.5-inch display, 5,000 mAh battery, and measurements of 164.2 x 76.1 x 9.1mm, making it similar in size to the recent iPhone 12 Pro Max. The renders also confirm the device will feature a USB-C charging port, 3.5mm headphone jack, and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor that also doubles as a power button. Other details, including processor, memory, and display resolution are still unknown.

The Galaxy A32 5G will reportedly be Samsung’s most affordable 5G phone yet — even cheaper than the Galaxy A42 5G, which recently launched across the UK and Europe. The new device is said to be part of Samsung’s 2021 Galaxy A series. It’s unclear when Samsung will unveil the device, but reports claim it’s still a few months away, and there’s always the chance plans could change.

It doesn’t sound like the Galaxy A32 5G will be announced at Samsung’s upcoming Unpacked event in January, which will reportedly see the company unveil the Galaxy S21 series and new wireless earbuds with ANC. For now, we have some leaked specs and renders to go on, but we already like what we see.

    Samsung HW-T510 soundbar system
The Samsung HW-T510 soundbar system is a great budget pick. At just $130, it offers a 2.1 channel soundbar system with a wireless subwoofer that can liven up your home cinema experience.

On top of that, the soundbar features some convenient connectivity options, including Bluetooth, HDMI, and AUX, for ease of use. You can even connect the soundbar to two devices simultaneously and seamlessly switch between the two whenever required. It’s especially great for those who have a Samsung smart TV at home since it can be controlled using the TV remote.

Samsung HW-T550 2.1 channel soundbar

If you can stretch your budget a little, then we’d recommend going for the Samsung HW-T550. For a $50 premium over the HW-T510, the HW-T550 offers 320W max output and all the features that you get with the former.

    Samsung HW-T550 soundbar system
At just $50 more than the HW-T510, the Samsung HW-T550 offers a significantly better audio experience with DTS virtual surround and Dolby Audio support. It's also a bit more powerful and delivers a max output of 320W.

Additionally, the HW-T550 offers support for 3D surround sound using Dolby Audio and DTS Virtual:X, an optimized gaming mode to deliver the best experience when connected to a console, and Samsung’s Smart Sound mode, which automatically detects what you’re watching and optimizes the sound to deliver the best experience.

LG SN6Y 3.1 channel soundbar

If a 2.1 channel soundbar just doesn’t cut it for you and you can’t stretch your budget enough to accommodate a 5.1 channel soundbar, then the LG SN6Y soundbar hits the perfect sweet spot for you as it features a dedicated center channel. At a discounted price of $230, this LG soundbar offers 420W peak output with DTS Digital Surround, DTS Virtual:X, and Dolby Digital support for a great surround sound experience.

LG SN6Y 3.1 channel soundbar system
The LG SN6Y soundbar system offers a dedicated center channel that can deliver better quality surround sound than the aforementioned options from Samsung. It also offers a peak output of 420W, making it the most powerful soundbar system under $250.

Much like the two Samsung units, the LG SN6Y soundbar features various connectivity options, including HDMI out, USB in, Optical Digital Audio out, and Bluetooth. The soundbar also includes LG’s AI Sound Pro feature that automatically optimizes the audio based on whatever you’re watching.

VIZIO SB36512-F6 5.1.2 channel soundbar system

The soundbar is currently available at a $200 discount at Best Buy, and it offers the best audio experience out of this lot. The 5.1.2 channel setup includes a soundbar with 5 channels, a wireless subwoofer, and 2 satellite speakers that you can place behind you for the ultimate home cinema experience.

VIZIO SB36512-F6 5.1.2 channel soundbar system
At just $300, the VIZIO SB36512-F6 soundbar system offer the most authentic surround sound experience out of this lot. The Dolby Atmos-certified system features a 3 channel soundbar, a 6-inch wireless subwoofer, and two satellite speakers.

This Dolby Atmos-certified soundbar system from VIZIO not only offers great sound output, but it also comes with a bunch of additional features. These include built-in Chromecast, Google Assistant support, Wi-Fi streaming, and multi-room wireless audio support. On top of that, the soundbar system comes with a free six-month TIDAL subscription for HiFi music streaming.

Bose Soundbar 700

In case none of the aforementioned options appeal to your refined taste, then you should probably consider getting the Bose Soundbar 700. The soundbar is currently available for $700 on Amazon, $100 down from its usual selling price of $800. While it’s the most expensive soundbar on this list, it doesn’t come with a wireless subwoofer or additional satellite speakers. But what it lacks in terms of the number of components, it makes up in terms of audio quality.

    Bose Soundbar 700
The Bose Soundbar 700 is a great option for someone with more refined tastes who's willing to shell out a premium for the exceptional build quality and additional features, like AI assistant support with an 8-mic array, wireless streaming, Apple AirPlay support, and more.

Despite its low-profile form factor, the Bose Soundbar 700 can get quite loud and it offers crisp and clear audio, even at high volumes. It also offers a bunch of additional features, including Google Assistant/Amazon Alexa support with a custom 8-mic array, multi-room wireless audio support with other Bose smart speakers, and a companion app for audio customizations. The soundbar includes both Bluetooth and WiFi support for wireless connections, and it even supports Apple AirPlay for wireless music streaming.

That wraps our list of the best Cyber Monday soundbar deals. If I had to pick one out of this lot for my personal setup, I’d probably go with the VIZIO 5.1.2 channel system as it offers the best surround sound experience at a rather affordable price. Which one would you pick? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Pixel 4 XL hits an all-time low price this Cyber Monday

The Google Pixel 4/4XL was a major upgrade to the Pixel lineup in more than one way. With the Pixel 4 XL, Google discarded the awkwardly long notch on the Pixel 3XL to accommodate a slew of sensors alongside the selfie camera. These sensors included a 3D facial recognition kit, just like iPhone’s Face ID, and Soli RADAR for motion sensing gestures. Although the Pixel 4 XL is a year old, you might miss its flagship power with the newer Pixels. If you don’t mind adopting facial unlock as your only way to unlock the phone, the Pixel 4 XL is on sale at Amazon this Cyber Monday. You can get it for only $550 instead of its listed price of $900, saving $350.

Google Pixel 4 XL 64GB Clearly White
Despite being a year old, the Google Pixel 4 XL is among the best camera phones on the market. It is the first Pixel with dual cameras and features Google's experimental Soli technology for motion sensing. You can buy the phone for just $550 at the Cyber Monday sale on Amazon.

Google’s hardware ambitions did not quite take the same flight as they expected with the Pixel 4/4 XL packed with an awful lot of new features and the company officially discontinued the series in favor of the more conventionally designed Pixel 5 and the Pixel 4a 5G. They are powered by Snapdragon 765G instead of the latest Snapdragon 8xx series chipset. While the Pixel 4XL features an older Snapdragon 855 chip, you can expect nearly the same CPU power and better GPU performance.

With the Pixel 4 series, Google also took a major leap from single cameras for three generations to dual cameras. The secondary camera on this generation was a 16MP telephoto camera with a 2x optical zoom complementing the 12MP primary camera. In addition to the camera hardware, the two phones brought along a host of software features for photography, many of which were not even highlighted at the launch event. The Pixel 4 series was announced with Android 10 out-of-the-box and is bound to get three years of incremental updates ie. up to Android 13.

The Pixel 4 XL, although listed at $900, has usually been available between $600-$700, of late. Nonetheless, $549 is still the lowest price ever for which the phone has been available.

Meanwhile, if you would rather be happy with the newer Pixel that replaces the telephoto with a wide-angle camera, you can also save $200 on the Pixel 5 at Best Buy.

Download: MIUI 12 stable update rolling out to several Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO devices

MIUI 12 is the newest big release for Xiaomi smartphones, perhaps even bigger than an Android version jump. Features on Xiaomi devices are dictated more by their MIUI versions than the underlying Android version, so a MIUI version upgrade is an exciting event. The first batch of devices to receive the MIUI 12 stable update included the Xiaomi Mi 9, Redmi K20/Mi 9T, and Redmi K20 Pro/Mi 9T Pro. As we reach the end of June 2020, Xiaomi’s first phase of MIUI 12 rollout is complete, as many more devices have been added since the initial rollout. This article will serve as the central repository of download links for all Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO devices that have received their official MIUI 12 stable updates. We’ll update it regularly with fresh builds!

MIUI 12: Features

MIUI 12 was announced in April 2020, following the footsteps of MIUI 11 that gained massive popularity thanks to Xiaomi’s hardware push as well as the feature abundance within the UX.

MIUI 12 Hands-on: 12 interesting new features added in Xiaomi’s Android OS

MIUI 12 brings along a cleaner UI, new animations, changes to navigation gestures, new live wallpapers, and AOD designs, privacy indicators for the microphone, camera, and location usage, improvements to multi-window, and Picture-in-Picture, an in-built sleep tracker, and many more changes throughout the UX!

Generic flashing instructions are available at the bottom of this article. However, we advise users to refer to the device forums for specific flashing instructions for their device, in case there are any variations or special instructions that need to be followed.

Another important point to note: Xiaomi follows only a thin distinction between “beta stable” update and “stable” updates. Beta stable updates are only intended for users enrolled within the Mi Pilot beta testing program, meaning that builds assigned for this group will not install on devices with Mi Accounts that do not have the requisite permission. Once the Mi Pilot beta testers give positive feedback, the same build then gets opened up as a stable release, creating a lot of confusion — for instance, the same builds linked below might first fail to install, but then they will make an appearance through the official OTA. If you get the error message that the update is for closed beta testers only, you can sideload the update through TWRP.

Flashing Instructions for MIUI 12

Note that these are generic flashing instructions that should generally be applicable across Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO devices. However, there is a possibility that there is a variation that is unique to your device, so we strongly advise visiting your device forums for device-specific instructions.

Recovery ROM Installation for MIUI 12

Recovery ROMs come with a .zip file extension and can be installed either through the Local Update method from within MIUI, or through the Xiaomi stock recovery. You can also use a custom recovery like TWRP for installing these ROMs, though do note that device-specific instructions may differ in that case.

  1. Local Update method:
    1. Transfer the download .zip file to your phone, and ensure you place the file in the “downloaded_rom” folder in the internal storage of your device. If no such folder exists, create one in your internal storage base directory.
    2. Within your phone, navigate to Settings > About Phone > System Update, and then press the three-dot icon in the top-right corner, and select “Choose Update Package”.
    3. If the “Choose Update Package” option is missing, tap on the MIUI logo 10 times to activate the option.
    4. Choose the downloaded .zip file.
    5. Wait for the update to install.
  2. Recovery method:
    1. Rename the downloaded .zip file to update.zip and transfer it to the base directory of your phone’s internal storage.
    2. Reboot your phone into recovery mode by powering it off and then pressing both the Power and the Volume Up buttons together.
    3. Scroll to the “Install update.zip” option using the volume keys, and select the option using the power button.
    4. Wait for the update to install.
    5. Choose the “Reboot” option if your phone does not reboot by itself after installation is completed.

Fastboot ROM Installation for MIUI 12

Fastboot ROMs come with a .tgz file extension and require a Windows computer for the installation, as well as a phone with an unlocked bootloader. However, despite being comparatively more complicated to install than Recovery ROMs, Fastboot ROMs are sometimes the only way to boot into a working system. For instructions on unlocking the bootloader of your phone, check your device’s subforums on XDA.

  1. Download MiFlash Tool on your Windows computer. The latest version can be found in Step 1 of this link. Once downloaded, extract the tool and install it. It is also advisable to have ADB and Fastboot installed, just in case you need it.
  2. Reboot your phone into Download mode by powering it off and then pressing both the Power and Volume Down buttons together.
  3. Connect your phone to the computer using the appropriate USB cable.
  4. Download the Fastboot ROM .tgz file and extract it. Remember the extract location, as you will need to paste the address into MiFlash Tool.
  5. Run MiFlash Tool on your Windows Computer and in the address bar within the tool, paste the extract location from Step 4.
  6. Click “Refresh” within MiFlash and the app should automatically recognize your device.
  7. Click “Run” within MiFlash to flash the ROM file to the device.
  8. The progress bar within MiFlash will turn green, which indicates that the ROM was successfully installed. Your device should boot automatically to the new version.
